Limitations
Pages that can't comply as they are (e.g. CMYK colours or non-embedded fonts without an equivalent) become images; run OCR if you need searchable text.
Protected PDFs must be unlocked first, because PDF/A doesn't allow encryption.

What changes in the file?
Fonts and the colour profile are embedded, identification metadata is added, and what the standard forbids (JavaScript, attachments, etc.) is removed.
